Wizard’s Tower Acquires New Novel from Ben Mears

Wizard’s Tower is delighted to announce the acquisition of World English and ebook rights to The Jicker Man, a post-apocalyptic novel by Ben Mears. The book was edited by Joanne Hall.

In a world ravaged by rising sea level and nuclear war, Britain is a dangerous place reliant on steampunk technology. Street urchin, Ebadiah, is given a chance in life by two middle class men who recognise his intelligence. They tell him about their secret struggle against mutated beings called gawpers who have psychic powers.

When his benefactors are called up to the army to face a foreign invader, Ebadiah must deal with the gawpers by himself. He has a permanent limp, a damaged eye and little self-confidence. But with a faithful dog and some good friends, a young man can perhaps accomplish great deeds.

Ben Mears said: “The Jicker Man has been a true labour of love that has spanned several years in the writing. My battles to forge a way in its creation mirror Ebadiah’s own tumultuous struggle (at least in my head). I’m therefore thrilled to bits that it has found safe harbour in the amazing Wizard’s Tower Press.”

Publisher, Cheryl Morgan, said: “I very much liked the vision of the future that Ben provides in this book. Post-apocalyptic novels are very common these days, but this one is refreshingly different.”

Editor, Joanne Hall, said: “I was delighted when Ben asked me to take a look at The Jicker Man. I have a real soft spot for post-apocalyptic fiction and I instantly warmed to Ebadiah. I’m really pleased the novel has found a home at Wizard’s Tower.”

Publication is expected in summer 2025.
